Tracking Your Federal Refund: A Guide for Phoenix & Mesa Taxpayers

For many of our clients in Phoenix and Mesa, tax season is really "refund season." Whether you are planning to reinvest in your business or handle personal expenses, waiting for that deposit can be stressful. To improve security and speed, the IRS has largely moved away from paper checks, pushing for electronic transfers to minimize the risk of mail theft and fraud. For those without traditional bank accounts, options like prepaid debit cards are now common alternatives.

Using the Official IRS Tracker

Once we have filed your return, the most reliable way to check your status is through the official online portal. Where’s My Refund? is the interactive tool provided directly by the IRS. It provides data nearly 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

If you opted for e-filing—which we highly recommend for speed—you can typically check your status 24 hours after the IRS acknowledges receipt. For the few who still file paper returns, the wait time to see a status update jumps to four weeks. Generally, nine out of 10 e-filed returns with direct deposit are processed in fewer than 21 days.

What You Need to Check Your Status

To protect your privacy, the system requires specific verification. Before logging in, have your copy of the federal return we prepared for you nearby. You will need to enter:

  • Your Social Security Number (or ITIN),

  • The specific tax year (2025, 2024, or 2023),

  • Your filing status (e.g., Single, Married Filing Jointly, Head of Household), and

  • The exact whole-dollar refund amount shown on your return.

Once verified, the tool will display one of three stages:

  • Return Received: The IRS has your return and is processing it.

  • Refund Approved: They have finished processing and are preparing to send your funds.

  • Refund Sent: The money is on its way to your bank (allow up to 5 days for it to post) or the check is in the mail.

Dealing with Delays and Accessibility

If you encounter issues, Where’s My Refund? will provide links tailored to your situation. For example, if your refund is missing for more than 28 days after the mailed date listed in the tool, you can initiate a refund trace.

For mobile users, IRS2Go is a convenient, free app for Apple and Android that offers the same tracking capabilities. Additionally, the online tool is accessible for visually impaired taxpayers using screen readers and Braille displays.

When to Contact a Professional

The IRS system updates once every 24 hours, usually overnight, so there is no benefit to checking multiple times a day. Furthermore, IRS phone representatives generally cannot provide more information than the online tool unless significant time has passed.

However, if your refund is unreasonably delayed, or if the tool indicates a freeze or audit, that is where we come in. As Enrolled Agents and Certified Tax Resolution Specialists, Vernon C Daniels Jr and our team at New Beginnings One Stop Tax Help can communicate directly with the IRS to resolve holds. If you are experiencing problems receiving your refund, please contact our office for assistance.
